However it may be, her polite request had a magical effect upon the sailors, for they immediately "worked with a will: hove anchor and set sail, not wishing to remain a moment longer than they could help near her habitation. If the file has been modified from its original state, some details may not fully reflect the modified file. The blame for Matthew’s disappearance is often placed on the mermaid; she is depicted as an evil temptress who lured an innocent man to his death with her song. There are many reasons as to why there might have been a mermaid carved into a chair at a church, as mermaids represented two things to medieval Christians.

The Mermaid of Zennor ( Cornish: An Vorvoren a Senar) is a popular Cornish folk tale that was first recorded by the Cornish folklorist William Bottrell in 1873. After many years, the mysterious woman became interested in a young man named Mathey Trewella, [i] "the best singer in the parish.

Even today, the village of Zennor itself seems exactly the sort of place where one would expect to encounter a mermaid. We gathered nouns and adjectives, using our senses, imagining what it must have been like for Tom and Zac to live there. One Chinese folklorist describes a mermaid captured on Namtao Island as ‘Her features and limbs were in all respects human, except that her body was covered with fine hair of many beautiful colours’. Mermaids and mermen were often portrayed in carvings and paintings in Cornish churches, but this is one of the very few which have survived.

Two ways of telling the same story: a church postcard (left) and a photo from St Senara's at night (right). The Doom Bar sandbank blocking the Camel estuary in which Padstow resides was supposedly created by an angry mermaid after a sailor shot her. On the chair's side there is a curious carving of a mermaid, a symbol which had several interpretations for medieval worshippers. The general consensus is that it was first written down in 1873 by William Bottrell who was a keen collector of Cornish folklore. According to the tale she was forced into a barrel as punishment which was then nailed shut and cast into the ocean. Much of his poetry centres on Cornish stories, such as ‘The Ballad of Charlotte Dymond’, which narrates a notorious murder in Bodmin in 1844.

So you cast anchor, you drop the anchor, into the water, and the anchor stops the ship from moving because it is very heavy. It is written in a poetic style, and the retelling by the poet Charles Causley and contains a wealth of archaic vocabulary that lends itself to literary language. But it is not only folk songs of the 1980s which are inspired by the legend; the funky and upbeat song ‘Zennor Mermaid’ by indie pop band The Hit Parade is a more modern musical adaptation of the legend. Legend has it that many, many years ago a richly dressed and beautiful lady occasionally attended the church at Zennor. As with all old folk tales, the story differs slightly each time it is told, but the basic framework of the legend is always the same.Charles Causley was born in Cornwall, and apart from six years spent in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, lived there all his life. Although Zennor folks were remarkable for their fine psalmody, she excelled them all; and they wondered how, after the scores of years that they had seen her, she continued to look so young and fair. Every night at evensong the mermaid would come to hear him until one night as Mathew sang a particularly lovely verse Morveren let out a tiny sigh. Free parking along the one-way village access road is very limited; you might get lucky and find a space, or you might not!

Here, there are stories and whispers of a villager capturing the heart of a mysterious and beautiful stranger – a stranger from the sea – a mermaid! The mermaid was frightened and made her way back to the sea with Mathew (and a fair few of the townsfolk) in pursuit. Any visitor to Zennor will note that a rather steep cliff separates the nearby coastal path from the shoreline, which no mere mortal could traverse with ease. She was said to have bestowed three wishes and a magical comb upon a helpful farmer named Lutey who carried her back to sea when she was stranded on the beach.

The author died in 1927, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 95 years or fewer. When Senara became pregnant, the king’s mother falsely accused her of infidelity and the king cast her into the sea. It’s also said that the mermaid was seen several years later by a fisherman, who had inadvertently dropped anchor in front of the door to her house. He moved away from their small Cornish village two months prior to attend a university in the bustling capital of the country, London. In some versions of the legend, the mermaid was spotted several years later by a fisherman who had weighed anchor off the coast.
