Vampires and demons rise from the shadows, but they’re not the only ones. When Buffy is pitted against her allies, who will win? Few shows have a following like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This “monster of the week” style TV show ran for 7 seasons and led to the spin-off show Angel along with multiple comic books over the years. I only watched a few episodes of the show during it’s initial run in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, but I had plenty of friends who loved the show and consumed everything Buffy.

Unmatchedis a highly asymmetrical miniature fighting game for two or four players. Robin Hood vs. Bigfootfeatures the titular heroes. Being critical of an Unmatched set is tough because the bones of the game are so strong. Everything works here and anyone who has played Unmatched could easily jump in. This set struggles to stand out because none of the characters themselves stand out. I’ve played a couple times with each hero and they’re all fine. Mondo, the makers of the Unmatched Series, have the like that it 'navigates the pop culture chaos of the past and present to SAVE THE FUTURE'. Well, we can't guarantee the saving the future part - that's got to be left to either Marty McFly or Busted - but we can watch it navigate the pop culture of old, and it's done so this time with Restoration Games for Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. The artwork of Unmatched has been spectacular since the beginning. One of my favorite things about getting a new set is to look through each of the cards and see the beautiful artwork. This time around artist Heather Vaughan brought her illustration style to the game. You’ll notice from even the front of the box that the set goes with a more sketched, comic book aesthetic than the other Unmatched sets. Overall the art is solid, even though a few of the cards, Buffy in particular, struggle with consistency with facial expressions. Battle of Legends, Volume Twofeatures four heroes: Yennenga, Achilles, Sun Wukong, and Bloody Mary. The maps that are part of the Unmatched system are really well thought out. With these maps especially, you can imagine characters jumping from one level to another to pursue their opponent. Fans of Buffy are going to feel a connect to these characters because they can imagine these locations and the battle unfolding. Honestly, this is the strength and weakness of this particular set. Fans of the Slayer Like the Cobble & Fog and Volume 1 sets, Buffy comes with a large double-sided board that supports four fighters. On one side you have Sunnydale High, and on the other you’ll find The Bronze. Both maps are really well done and use levels to break up adjacency. I really like the way that The Bronze uses indoor and outdoor spaces along with a catwalk inside the club, which gives the advantage to ranged fighters. We’re so excited to bring you a closer look at the latest addition to Mondo Games and Restoration Games’ miniatures dueling game series – Unmatched: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Unmatched: Buffy the Vampire Slayer is more great Unmatched action but is not necessarily for every gamer. Fans of Buffy will find a lot to enjoy about this set, but for us it’s one of the weaker line ups so far. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is all about a cheerleader who becomes a horror/action heroine. Fittingly, the art in this set is dark while also showing a humorous side. Is this Unmatched unbalanced? Unmatched: Hell's Kitchenfeatures three characters from the Marvel comics universe: Daredevil, Elektra, and Bullseye. The Family Gamers received a copy of Unmatched: Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Restoration Games for this review. With the revelation of all the abuse going on behind the scenes of the Buffy TV show, it’s been hard to enjoy this game fully. But I’m trying not to let that stop me from enjoying the characters and their interactions. Speaking of the TV show, it was rated TV-14, just like the age recommendation on this game. Much like Cobble & Fog, Buffy the Vampire Slayer handles very dark subject matter, and the card art reflects this, but without using gory imagery. I did play with my 10-year-old, but since he knows nothing about the TV show, the darker references didn’t mean anything to him.

Unmatched: Buffy the Vampire Slayer is another entry into the Unmatched series by Restoration Games and Mondo Games. This boxed set supports up to four players, ages 14+. How to Play Unmatched While I don’t have a deep knowledge of the source material, the Buffy themed Unmatched set is really intriguing to me. Because of this, I actually started watching the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series when the Unmatched game released in the Fall, and I’ve enjoyed enjoyed a couple of seasons already. For those of us that haven’t watched the TV series, I’m not sure there’s enough in this set to pull you in. This is such an odd review for me because even when an Unmatched set isn’t a “home run” for us, it’s still pretty great. Unmatched: Unmatched: Teen Spiritfeatures four characters from the Marvel comics universe: Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, and the team of Cloak and Dagger.
